Where It All Began
Luna was not planned.
She arrived at my door during a time in my life when I was barely showing up for myself. Most days felt heavy. Getting out of bed felt optional. My wardrobe rotated between sweats and an old T-shirt, and I told myself I was just “tired,” even though deep down I knew I was struggling more than I wanted to admit. But someone else saw right through the fake smile I kept plastering on my face everyday.
And that someone decided I needed a reason to get up.
He showed up with a five-month-old bullmastiff mix puppy who looked like she needed her own zip code. I was confused at why he would bring such a big dog to my tiny apartment. He saw the confusion on my face and that is when he said, “you need a reason to get out of bed every day and this girl needs a home.”
Just like that I was the owner of a overgrown puppy. Not a planned, color-coded, researched for days kind of puppy owner. I was the owner of a giant puppy in a tiny apartment, wondering how either of us were going to fit.
Over the next few days I questioned whether I could keep her. I questioned whether I should.
Then life made the decision for me.
The same person who brought Luna to my door passed away unexpectedly. In that moment, Luna became more than a puppy. She became the last living connection to someone I loved deeply and lost far too soon.
Letting her go was no longer an option.
That was the beginning of our story.
